Guest Lecture: Art Against Artillery – Cultural Resilience in Times of Crisis
15/10/2025

On 14 October 2025, Ukrainian author and journalist Olha Volynska delivered the lecture “Art Against Artillery: Cultural Resilience in Times of Crisis” within the Erasmus+ project “Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine”.

Held in a hybrid format at the University of Graz and online, the event brought together more than 40 participants from different European universities. Olha Volynska shared her reflections on how Ukrainian artists, writers, and musicians respond to the ongoing war through creative expression. Drawing on her recent book Art Against Artillery: Voices of Resilience (2025), she illustrated how artistic narratives capture the emotional and social dimensions of wartime reality. Olha Volynska demonstrated that art not only documents the experience of war but also serves as a powerful instrument of healing, resilience, and the preservation of national identity in times of destruction.

The lecture was part of the ongoing series “Ukrainian Voices: Academic Freedom in a Changing World,” co-organised by the University of Graz (Austria) and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Poland).
